Effects of digital divide on social inequality
Abstract
This research explores the effects of the digital divide on social inequality, examining how disparities in access to digital technologies exacerbate existing social and economic inequalities. As technology becomes increasingly integral to education, employment, and social participation, individuals without reliable internet access or digital literacy face significant barriers. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative data analysis of socioeconomic indicators with qualitative interviews from affected individuals and community organizations. Findings demonstrate that the digital divide disproportionately impacts marginalized groups, including low-income families, rural communities, and racial minorities, limiting their opportunities for upward mobility and civic engagement. The research reveals that lack of access to technology not only hinders educational attainment but also restricts access to essential services, job opportunities, and social networks. Additionally, the study highlights the role of local policies and community initiatives in bridging the digital gap. Recommendations include investing in infrastructure, enhancing digital literacy programs, and fostering public-private partnerships to promote equitable access to technology. This research underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address the digital divide as a critical factor in reducing social inequality and fostering an inclusive society.
